Each sports season marks a new beginning, new teams, new faces, new talent. Therefore, we preview each of the local teams we cover at the Republic-Times in the Seasonal Sports Preview.
So even though more snow has been moving into the Midwest, it actually is spring. The boys of summer have taken the field, despite the fact that I have been frozen solid at each of their games. But that’s life, sports and the St. Louis weather — unpredictable.
This year, with my start at the multimedia publication, I have created video previews of each team to accompany the print preview in the paper. It is a lot of hustling to write an eight-page special section and shoot, write and edit about nine videos to go along with it in a short period of time, but it has been worth it for the paper. The campaign has gotten the kids and their parents more interested in what we are doing than every before. It is fun for the schools and community and for marketing and broadening our audience.
No longer are we just your typical ole’ paper, but we are a multimedia publication and campaigns such as this really help us in that aspect.

I have enjoyed having the opportunity to bring a few things to the paper, such as video, but I have also enjoyed learning a few things on the print side of the media industry. One of those skills I have acquired at the paper is action/sports still photography. I have always enjoyed taking photos as an art form, but have never had the challenge of capturing an instant in a fast paced sporting contest.
Here are examples of photos I shot last week, while out and about in the opening of the spring season.
