Hanging with Hall of Famers

One of the great aspects of covering this organization is all the Cardinals alumni and legends that come around the team or have stayed in St. Louis. This allows us to feature and interview those fan-favorites that have captured the hearts and created so many wonderful memories for generations of Cardinals fans.

As a reporter, this makes my job so much more enjoyable (and probably a tad easier). On any given day I can walk down the halls or in the Clubhouse at Busch Stadium and run into the likes of Red Schoendienst or Ozzie Smith, to name a few. It never gets old chatting with those guys and helps me build a rapport with those at the core of the organization and those that I could potentially interview at special events.

One such special event was the second annual Cardinals Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday. Along with meeting Ted Simmons and the families of the remaining inductees that are no longer with us (Bob Forsch, George Kissell and Curt Flood), it was also a reunion of such for the current Hall of Famers.

They were all kind enough to let me behind-the-scenes of their private events that day to capture the festivities from their perspective for the fans. I even landed an interview with actor Jon Hamm, St. Louis native, Cardinals fan and Simmons’ family-friend.

I also covered a recent event for #CardsInsider featuring two current Hall of Famers. “An Evening with Willie and Ozzie” was a treat to report on. Willie McGee and Ozzie Smith are two good friends, with wonderful hearts that fans enjoy to hear from on any occasion.

I got a lot of great feedback on this piece as well, and was delighted to cover the event for the fans.

In addition to my backpack reporting efforts for the club, I’ve also had several projects that I’ve been assigned to produce recently. One project that was released in a two-part series over the last two weeks was a sit-down interview with Cardinals Magazine Senior Staff Writer Stan McNeal and someone who will probably pitch his way into the Cardinals Hall of Fame (at least) — Adam Wainwright.

McNeal talked to Waino about a visit to his home for the latest issue, where they watched a game together and Waino showed him his garden.

Other recent #CardsInsider stories:

The organization recently announced two big partnerships in efforts to help the city move forward. Both the upcoming US Men’s National Team World Cup Qualifier and CityArchRiver project will have large, positive impacts on St. Louis. Once again, it’s great to work for a company that sees the value in making its city and it’s home a better place.

The club also welcomed three new players, Jonathan Broxton, Brandon Moss and Steve Cishek, who were acquired at the trade deadline.
