On TOUR: Quicken Loans National in D.C.

I hit the road for the first time with the PGA TOUR at Quicken Loans National this week. It was fun to get out to a tournament for the first time in my new role and explore our nation’s capital!

I had never been to Washington D.C. and was delighted to explore our country’s historic city. If you ever travel to D.C., I highly recommend staying in downtown Bethesda, MD. It was close to downtown D.C. and the golf course, not to mention all the cute restaurants and shops in the area. We had a blast! (You must visit la Madeleine Country French Café if you want the best breakfast around)

After landing Monday evening we immediately went downtown. Had to make the White House our first stop! One of my favorite dinners of the trip was at Hamilton’s that evening. Their cornbread grilled cheese, fried green tomatoes was sushi is excellent!

The best way to end your night in the capital? Stroll through the National Mall at night, the monuments are just gorgeous all lit up! (Plus its not too crowded.)

Tuesday was my first day at the course. Aside from TPC Sawgrass’ clubhouse, Congressional is one of the most impressive I’ve seen – because of its sheer size. (Doral is more extravagant but Congressional is still very high class, not to mention all the history!)

It was a great week to say the least: getting to cover Quicken Loans ambassador Rickie Fowler leading up to tournament play…

…showing of the Quicken Loans Shot for Heroes Challenge with, not only the Bryan Bros, but with Jhonny Vegas – and did I mention I beat Patrick Reed in our challenge? (He did it left handed, but there’s no reason to highlight that 😉

It was also phenomenal to follow a few players making their professional debut at Quicken Loans National. Jon Rahm of Arizona State made a splash, leading at one point in the tourney and finishing T3. In addition, to Oklahoma State product Jordan Niebrugge – who had strong ties to fellow Cowboy Rickie Fowler.

Not to mention the best story line of the week – local and Naval Academy alum Billy Hurley III getting his first PGA TOUR win in his hometown, in front of fellow military members just a few years after his father’s tragic death at the very same tournament.

We also found time to head over to Baltimore for and Orioles game. You know me, as a St. Louis Cardinals fan and a baseball girl, I’ve always wanted to check Camden Yards off my baseball bucket list and it was as cool as I had imagined.

Hint: if you go, get something with crab on it 😉

I went with fellow PGA TOUR contributors, equipment editor Jon Wall and social media expert Charlie Kane, and they couldn’t get enough of the crab mac-n-cheese hot dogs.

It was definitely a great trip to kick off my PGA TOUR adventures! I’ll be on the road again this week, this time heading back home to STL as a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding. See you all on the 4th of July for Trending on TOUR!
