Don’t sell yourself short | appreciate your present journey

If you’ve been following early-week PGA Championship action, I’m sure you’ve heard all about the shorts. That’s right, players are allowed to wear shorts this week during their practice rounds, à la the PGA of America. That, coupled with a few self-improvement thoughts I’ve had recently — inspired me to share my recent mantra: “don’t sell yourself short.” (I know, I’m corny🌽)

Last week I wrote about how we should work to make Twitter and social media a more positive place in the wake of the U.S. Girls Junior amateur rules controversy. I hope to continue to spread positive vibes wherever I can — this blog included.

So today, on this T-time Tuesday let’s set a reminder not to sell ourselves short! Don’t do it on the golf course, don’t do it while you are scrolling through social media, don’t do it at the gym or at work. Remain in the present and appreciate where you are at in your current journey — not someone else’s.

I know how social media can allow us to reflect a lot of pressure on ourselves. We see everyone’s highlights broadcast through perfect little square photos on our phones. Never getting a glimpse of what it took to make those highlights happen, never seeing the low-lights of someone’s journey. And that’s ok, because I sure as heck don’t want to post a photo of myself gross and sweaty after my gym sesh, or wearing a facial mask at night on my couch, or struggling to juggle all my duties on my to-do list.

But I too, have to remind myself when I see a person on Instagram, Facebook, etc., doing something that I wish I was doing too — whether it be in my career or my social life — to stop down and be grateful for what I am doing now and the opportunities that I am facing today.

A few months back I recorded a Podcast for a new project called Fearlessly Create with my friend Remy from the ‘Mason, Remy & Alabama Show’ on Big955 Chicago. In the Podcast and we dove into how I got started in this business and where I am today, my definition of what it is to ‘Fearlessly Create’ and how that applies to my job as a writer, reporter and host. It was a delight to go back and listen to it this week when it debuted and it was a great reminder to myself that I am doing just fine on my journey and to appreciate where I am today.

The reality is, we are all blessed in our own journeys and we are all scratching and clawing to make our dreams happen. So we shouldn’t sell ourselves short based on what we see others doing on social media.

So in short 😉 don’t put so much effort into being like those you see on Instagram.

Work on improving the value in your own self and don’t sell yourself short.

Next week I’ll share with you some interesting end-of-summer reads that have helped inspire me to work on being in the now and appreciate my present journey. Until then, I’ll see you on recapping all the action from Quail Hollow at the PGA Championship in The Takeaway Thursday-Sunday. I also invite you to enjoy #WineWednesday with me tomorrow (Wednesday, 8/9) evening at 8pm ET on Facebook to chat the final major of the year in a Facebook Live. It’ll be fun! 🍷
